Summary

A critical factor in almost every case of a sexual crime against a child is whether or not the perpetrator is a pedophile. 

A discussion of the difference between pedophilia and Pedophilic Disorder as diagnosed by the DSM-V is beyond the scope of this summary. A client’s actual sexual interest in children is important to know both for risk assessment and treatment planning.

In a study of 435 men recruited online, researchers explore what factors most likely indicate a predilection for minor attraction.

Summary

The majority of studies, particularly those conducted in the United States, looking at sexual interest in children are conducted with individuals who have been convicted of a sex crime against minors.  There are very few studies that look at sexual interest in children in the general, non-criminal, population.  The few studies that exist have found that somewhere between 3.5 and 4.2% of men self-report either a sexual interest in children or sexual fantasies about prepubescent children.

Summary

Over the last few years, there has been an increase in research looking at the neuropsychology and neurophysiology of individuals who identify as having an attraction to prepubescent minors (pedophiles) and comparing those results to those individuals who do not have these attractions. Additional research has looked to compare the neuropsychology of pedophilic child sex offenders to non-pedophilic child sex offenders.

How common is sexual attraction to children and what are common experiences across both male and female identifying respondents in the general population?

Summary

Sexual attraction to children is one of the most demonized sexual attractions in our society.  When someone is in the justice system who abuses a child or is known to have this attraction, or a diagnosis of Pedophilic Disorder, they are labeled deviant and assumed to be dangerous to the community.  While pedophilia is a risk factor for re-offending, the truth is, we really don’t know how common it is in the general, non-offending, population.  It’s just not something people talk about.
