A study to set a baseline for incestuous sexual offenders for psychosexual evaluations and risk assessments using a community sample of fathers from North America.

Summary

When conducting psychosexual evaluations and risk assessments, some measure of sexual interest is often used.

Normally, either the Penile Plethysmograph (PPG) or the ABEL screen, which is a visual reaction time (VRT) measure of sexual interest, are used.

Studies looking at VRT, particularly, in incest offenders are scarce. There are no known studies looking at sexual interest based on VRT in a community sample (non-offending) of fathers.

Research on child sexual abuse tends to focus on contact offending in a general sense or on abuse perpetrated by non-family members.

In a meta-analysis published in 2017 the authors, Pullman et. al, sought to study whether there were differences between biological and sociological incest offending.

Overview

This study, with over 2000 participants, explores the risk factors that can lead to this less researched form of childhood sexual abuse, known as Father Daughter Incest or FDI.

Summary

There is an extensive body of research on child sexual abuse perpetrators. However, there is substantially less on the sub population of individuals who commit incest sexual offenses.

Past research has shown that girls who live with stepfathers and not biological fathers are at greater risk of incest sexual abuse.

Other noted risk factors that have come from the research include poor marital or partner relationship, low income, domestic violence, and low levels of mother daughter closeness.

What factors play into sexual offenders who victimize family members versus extrafamilial offenders?

Summary

Individuals who commit incest cases have long puzzled researchers as they do not fit the traditional models of sexual offending.  Traditionally, experts say that there are two pathways to sexually offend.  One is the antisocial pathway where sexual offending is a byproduct of antisocial personality disorder, a robust criminal history and a lack of empathy for potential victims.  The second pathway is the sexually deviant pathway which posits that individuals commit sex crimes because they have sexually deviant interests such as pedophilia.
